Niger Delta Militants in Violent Protest

The ever busy East/West road in the South-South region of Nigeria took a different shape today (Tuesday 6th September) as vehicular traffic was halted for about three hours while some former militants had a field day, protesting what they termed their non-inclusion in the amnesty programme.

The aggrieved youths blocked the Mbiama axis of the road as early as 5. 30am to prevent movement from Port-Harcourt to Delta State, as well as in and out of Bayelsa State.  A popular market in the area, the Mbiama Tuesday market, was also disrupted due to sporadic gun shots around the scene.

Those who were trapped in the chaos appeared helpless as non of them could approach the ex-militants. The spokesperson of the Joint Task Force, Timothy Antigha, confirmed the incident, adding that "our men have been sent their to handle it from escalating".
