Peter Graves grew up in Minnesota and excelled at sports and music (as a saxophonist), and by age 16 he was a radio announcer at WMIN in Minneapolis. After two years in the U.S. Air Force, he studied drama at the University of Minnesota and then headed for Hollywood, where he first performed on television and later made his film debut in Rogue River (1951). Numerous film performances followed, especially in Westerns. Graves is mostly recognized for his performance in "Mission: Impossible"(1966). He was awarded a Golden Globe Award in 1971 for his role as Jim Phelps. He also received nominations for Emmy Awards and Golden Globe awards in other seasons of that show. Graves also won a Prime time Emmy Award for outstanding informational series in 1997 as host of A&E Biography. He was the younger brother of actor James Arness. Peter Graves will be greatly missed.
