ASUU Shuts Down Nigerian Universities Again

Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie and his comrades addressing journalists
Come Monday 26th September, 2011, the Academic Staff Union of Universities will embark on another one-week warning strike over what they termed ‘the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement reached with the Federal Government’. The union said government had refused to implement the condition of service, universities autonomy, pension and the issue of retirement age of lecturers. Consequently, it should be held responsible for this latest development.

The South-West coordinator of ASUU, Akin Ajisegiri, pointed out that the 2009 agreement was meant to be a benchmark for reversing the deteriorating state of the nation’s education; but added that government had refused to address the suggestions made by the union to that effect.

Mr Ajisegiri appealed to Nigerians to prevail on government to live up to its responsibility because Nigeria's developmental plans could be faster if education is given priority... Fellow Nigerians, the ball is now in your court. ASUU said you people should put pressure on government for them to do what is right. But what can Nigerians do to government? Hmm, I dey laugh o!
