Ibo Man Sets His Pregnant Wife and Sons Ablaze

Alexander Ndubuisi Egeonu, a record seller in Enugu city, is currently on the run after he set ablaze members of his family made up of his pregnant wife and two sons aged between two and three years. What on heart could make a sane man to perpetrate such evil against his own family?

According to eyewitnesses, on arrival at his shop where he sells musical records and Compact Discs, Alexander asked his wife to escort him to the filling station to buy fuel. Thinking that the fuel was meant for their generator, the wife consented. Shortly after they returned to the shop, Alexander went to a neighbour’s shop and started dragging the owner (a woman), claiming that she was indebted to him. The ‘surprised’ woman screamed aloud to attract neighbours and passersby who helped rescued her from him.

After the disgrace at his neighbours shop, Alexander returned to his shop the second time..
in anger, “tied the hands of his wife and poured the fuel on the floor. He thereafter locked the wife and his two sons inside the container and lit matches through the window to ignite it,” an eyewitness recounted. The pregnant woman and her two sons were severely burnt before neighbours forced the container open and brought them out. They were rushed to the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre.

The pregnant woman and her first son are said to be in critical condition. They’ve been transferred to the National Orthopedic Hospital. The state police public relations officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said investigation has commenced to ascertain the motive of the arsonist, adding that his men would do everything possible to apprehend him.

The fleeing Alexander was described as “very troublesome” by residents of the area who also revealed that he had beaten his wife to pulp on several occasions due to minor disagreements and always engaged any tenant who dares to intervene in a bitter quarrel... This is another case of violence against women and must be condemned by all and sundry!
