Wake Up Jonathan! Nigerians Say Mr. President is "Weak"

Thank goodness citizens of Nigeria are finally summoning courage to speak up against the manner the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration is 'attending' to the mass killing of innocent Nigerians by the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram, almost unchallenged. Things are getting out of hand and the people are beginning to realize that their lives are no longer safe and those elected and selected to guarantee their security are failing on a grand scale in this regard.

Coming to terms with this sad reality was slow in coming from the people but it's better late than never. Following the killing of about 200 innocent souls in Maiduguri and Damaturu and threat of more bombings by Boko Haram, Nigerians have angrily...
expressed themselves on the Facebook profile of the president and other platforms like Twitter and discussion forums. Some of those who react to the development attributed it to the "weakness" of Mr. President and that his approach to security issues in the country was characterised by timidity. They said he has failed to justify the mandate given to him by Nigerians at the April poll.

When the President’s Facebook wall was visited on Sunday at about 21:45hrs, his latest post was on Thursday around 10.07am. Though he wrote on the progress his administration had made in some sectors, but the preponderance of the reactions to the post focused on the latest of Boko Haram attacks.

A comment made by one Facebook user named, Precious Nevene, read: "Sincerely, you can do better than this. I had serious high hopes when you became President. But now you have to fix this. A leader that doesn’t inspire confidence and respect from his people is no leader at all."

Toyin Fajana commented thus: "GEJ, how come 136 of my cousins in the north were killed in one day. What the heck (sic) are you doing. You are Commander in Chief. Please act like the Commander in Chief you are. You seem to be the one sabotaging your government."

On his part, Martin Ogboogu stated: "Nigeria will go to war very soon. We need action or maybe you will get the message when the Boko Haram bombers hit you or Dame. Sort out our security now."

The reactions of Nigerians on Twitter are not different. Iniobong Umoh™ tweeted at about some minutes past 9pm thus: "These Boko Haram people have succeeded in making President Goodluck Jonathan weak and powerless, no one believes him anymore."

Chikaoduah, at about 4.28pm said: "We are highly disappointed in the administration of Goodluck Jonathan." A post by Godman_n on Nairaland on Friday at 3.24pm stated, "Jonah, Jonah is navigating the ship of the Nigerian state. Let those that gave us Jonah bear the brunt of his misrule."

Bu despite the obvious shortcomings of the government in the wake of renewed bombings and killings, die-hard supporters of the President do not see any wrong with the way things have turned out. Some of them are quick to point out that he had to cancel his trip to Bayelsa for his Brother's wedding because of the incident.

But who cares about such trivial issues? His words and body language is what's important, not who or where he visits. The President should not just say 'I condemn', he should tell Nigerians that such nonsense will NEVER be allowed to happen again and go ahead to demonstrate how he intend to achieved same. Orders to relevant agencies should be clear and precise. Nigerians MUST feel secure anywhere they live in this country, otherwise government is not serious.
