Nigerian Students in Deadly Protest Over New Fees

In an attempt to register their grievances against the decision of their school authority to force them to pay higher school fees, students of the University of Calabar rioted overnight. The protests which spiraled out of control recorded several attacks on homes and offices of the Vice Chancellor of the institution.

An eyewitness gave an update on the riot thus: "right now the university vice chancellor's office (has been) set ablaze by the students, the major road leading in and out of the school and major street blocked. Police are seen every were but they can do little because they can't enter into the university community, all they do now is try to stop weapons from being taken into the school compound."

Violence anywhere should not be supported but condemned... However, this incessant increase in tuition and other sundry fees should be checked by relevant agencies of government before it degenerates into a crisis situation.
