These are my top 10 movie actresses of the 60's and the films that they performed in:

Katharine Hepburn:

By the 1960′s Katherine Hepburn had been making films for over 30 years, with 8 Academy Award Nominations and one win. In 1960 she was nominated a 9th time for Best Actress in the film, Suddenly Last Summer, opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. In 1963, she again was nominated for a tenth Oscar as Mary Tyrone in the film, Long Day’s Journey Into Night(1962). Then in 1968 and 1969, Kathrine won her second and third Oscar for Best Actress in, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and The Lion in Winter. The 1960′s introduced her to a whole new group of fans.

Her first film was in 1967 in, Hurry Sundown, but that same year, she got the leading female role in, Bonnie and Clyde (opposite Warren Beatty) which won her an Oscar nomination. Very few actresses started off their Hollywood careers with Oscar nominated roles.

It would be another ten years before she won her Oscar, but in my opinion her greatest role was that of Bonnie Parker in, Bonnie and Clyde.

Audrey Hepburn, best work may have been in the 1960′s with one of her best known roles as Holly Golightly in, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or Eliza Doolitle in, My Fair Lady (even though her voice was dubbed in the singing parts). Beautiful, elegant, Hollywood.. had very few actresses like, Audrey.

Audrey's work with UNICEF, made the organization a household name.

In the 1960′s Taylor was known for her beauty, but she also was very talented. She was the winner of the 1960 Best Actress award in the film, Butterfield8 as a prostitute and in 1963′s Cleopatra and in 1966 she won the Best Actress award for the second time for her performance in, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolfe. Based on the controversial play by Edward Albee, this noir-ish 1966 drama stars former real-life couple Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, which maybe their best performances.

Her stage work in the late 1950's help prepared her for her film career in the 1960s. She averaged almost two movies a year throughout the decade, starting in 1960 with Tall Story, in which she recreated one of her Broadway roles as a college cheerleader pursuing a basketball star, played by Anthony Perkins. Period of Adjustment and Walk on the Wild Side followed in 1962. In Walk on the Wild Side Fonda played a prostitute, and earned a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer.

Fonda's breakthrough came with the film, Cat Ballou (1965), in which she played a schoolmarm turned outlaw. This comedy Western received five Oscar nominations. Soon after she performed in the comedies, Any Wednesday (1966) and Barefoot in the Park (1967).

In 1968 she played the lead role in, Barbarella, directed by her French film director husband Roger Vadim. The film, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) earned her first Oscar nomination. Fonda was very selective by the end of the 1960s, turning down lead roles in Rosemary's Baby and Bonnie and Clyde.

Marilyn Monroe:

Marilyn, had no real acting techniques. It was only Marilyn, a "star" and "sex symbol" of the "60's".

Her last completed film, The Misfits, was directed by John Huston and costarring Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter. Shooting taking place in the hot Northern Nevada desert. Monroe was frequently ill and unable to perform. Making the film was a difficult experience for all the actors; in addition to Monroe's illness, Montgomery Clift had frequently been unable to perform and by the final day of shooting, Thelma Ritter was in hospital suffering from exhaustion. Gable, commenting that he did not fell well, left the set without attending the wrap party. Within ten days Gable had died from a heart attack. Gable's widow, Kay, commented to Louella Parsons that it had been the "eternal waiting" on the set of The Misfits that had contributed to his death.

In 1962 Monroe began filming Something's Got to Give. It was to be directed by George Cukor, and co-starred Dean Martin and Cyd Charisse.

On May 19, 1962, she attended a birthday celebration of President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden, at the suggestion of Kennedy's brother-in-law, actor Peter Lawford. Where Monroe performed "Happy Birthday".

Monroe returned to the set of, Something's Got to Give and filmed a scene in which she performed nude in a swimming pool. Commenting that she wanted to "push Liz Taylor off the magazine covers", she gave permission for several partially nude photographs to be published by Life. Monroe was dismissed and was replaced by Lee Remick, and Dean Martin refused to work with any other actress.

Following her dismissal, she gave an interview to Cosmopolitan and was photographed at Peter Lawford's beach house sipping champagne and walking on the beach. She next posed for Vogue in a series of photographs that included several nudes. Published after her death, they became known as "The Last Sitting".

In the final weeks of her life, Monroe was planning future film projects, and to continue negotiations on the film, Something's Got to Give.. Among the projects was a biography of Jean Harlow filmed two years later with, Carroll Baker. Starring roles in, Irma la Douce and What a Way to Go! were also discussed. A film version of the Broadway musical, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, and an unnamed World War I–themed musical co-starring Gene Kelly were also discussed, but the projects were never to be.

Brigitte's, "sex kitten" beauty took the US by storm. In 1965 she performed as herself  in, "Dear Brigitte" (1965) with James Steward (she only appeared in one scene).



She prefers life outside of stardom. The Paparazzi constantly hounded her with their cameras. After her life in the spotlight, Brigitte went on to become a leading spokesperson for animal rights and started the "Foundation Brigitte Bardot".

Goldie Hawn:

Hawn, began her acting career as a cast member of the comedy Good Morning, World during 1967-1968, her role was the girlfriend of a radio disc jockey, with a stereotype "dumb blonde" personality. Her next role, was as one of the regular cast members on the 1968-1973 comedy show, Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. On the show, she would break out into giggles in the middle of a joke, and deliver a perfect performance a minute later. Hawn, was known as the "60s It" girl.

Hawn's Laugh-In personaiity was used in the film, Cactus Flower. Hawn had made her feature film debut in a bit role as a giggling dancer in the 1968 film, The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, in which she was billed as "Goldie Jeanne", but in her first major film role, in Cactus Flower (1969), she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as Walter Matthau's suicidal fiancée.




 

Sharon Tate:

Sharon Tate had performed only bit parts, but was considered a beautiful and rising actress. Tate met film director Roman Polanski then starred in Valley of the Dolls, followed by, The Wrecking Crew with Dean Martin.

Ava Gardner:

Ava Gardner, is thought of as one of the most beautiful actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age. In 1966, Gardner tried out for the role of Mrs. Robinson in the film, The Graduate (1967).

In 1968, she made what some consider to be one of her best films, Mayerling, in which she played the Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Austria opposite James Mason as Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Happy Birthday: Goldie Hawn!

Goldie Hawn (born November 21, 1945). Actress, film director, producer, and occasional singer. Hawn is known for her roles in Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. A comedy television program which ran for 140 episodes from January 22, 1968, to May 14, 1973. It was hosted by comedians Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. It originally aired as a one-time special on September 9, 1967 and was such a success that it was brought back as a series, replacing The Man from U.N.C.L.E.


She also performed in the films: Private Benjamin, Foul Play, Wildcats, Overboard, Bird on a Wire, Death Becomes Her, The First Wives Club, The Banger Sisters, and Cactus Flower, for which she won the 1969 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

One of my favorite Goldie Hawn movies is, Butterflies Are Free(1972). Film based on a play by Leonard Gershe. Directed by Milton Katselas and based on a screenplay by Leonard Gershe who also wrote the original play.Cast: Eddie Albert, Eileen Heckart and Goldie Hawn .

The story takes place San Francisco in the 1970's. Don Baker, was born blind and has always lived with his mother. His best friend Linda, takes Don out to parties to help build his confidence. Soon, he has enough confidence to move out on his own. But.. after Don moves into his new apartment, Linda falls in love with a guy from a party and takes off to live in Mexico.

Don asks his mother not come to see him for at least two months. Jill Tanner, moves in an apartment next door. She over hears Don arguing with his mother over the phone and turns up the radio. When Don asks her to turn the volume down, she asks if she can come over for a cup of coffee. Jill does not notice that Don is blind, until she sees him dropping his cigarette ash on the table.

Jill questions Don on how he manages living by himself. She tells Don that her favorite quote is from Mark Twain: "I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies." Don tells her that actually this is a quote from the Bleak House by Charles Dickens. Don makes up a song and starts to sing Butterflies are free on his guitar.



Later that afternoon, Jill takes Don out shopping to find some groovy new clothes. They have picnic on the floor of Don's apartment and later spent they spend the night together.

In the morning, Don's mother makes a surprise visit finding Don still in bed, while Jill is in the kitchen looking for something to eat.. She believes that Jill will break Don's heart just like Linda did. Don fights for independence from his mother as he tries to convince Jill that they can be together.

There are some wonderful scenes in this movie especially the performances between Heckart and Hawn.

Julie Christie

Julie Christie, is a British actress and sex symbol. A pop icon of the "swinging London" era of the 1960s, she has won the Academy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. My favorite Julie Christy film is, Shampoo(1975). Written by Robert Towne and directed by Hal Ashby. Cast: Warren Beatty, Julie Christie and Goldie Hawn, with Lee Grant, Jack Warden, Tony Bill and Carrie Fisher.



The film is about the day(1968), when Richard Nixon was first elected into the White House. George Roundy a very popular Beverly Hills hairdresser, whose occupation and charm provided him with the perfect opportunity to meet women. George wanting a salon of his own, is forced to play second fiddle to the "nickle-and-diming," hairdresser who owns the place. George turns to his wealthy lover Felicia and her husband Lester for the money. In George's meeting with Lester he meets his mistress, Jackie(played by Julie Christie), who once was George's former girlfriend.

Lester, who assumes George is gay, invites him to escort Jackie to a Republican Party election night soiree. Later that night,(in my favorite scene in the movie) they wind up at another type of party and the night quickly turns into drugs, alcohol and sexual indulgence.

George realizes that Jackie is his true love and proposes to her. Unfortunately by then it is too late. Jackie tells him that Lester is divorcing Felicia and taking her to Acapulco. With all the women in his life gone, George is left standing alone.

Warren Beatty gives a wonderful performance as a guy who sincerely does not want to hurt anyone, but he becomes a victim of his own actions.



Fun fact:

Julie Christie, a feminist, reportedly disliked the role of Jackie but did it for Warren Beatty, who at the time was her lover.

FOUL PLAY (1978)

Foul Play (1978). Comic/mystery/thriller. Director: Colin Higgins. Cast: Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase.

Gloria, working as a Librarian and living a lonely life after her divorce. Her friends thought she should start dating again.



So feeling a little adventurous, on her way home after a party, Gloria picks up a stranded motorist named Scotty, who gives her a pack of cigarettes with a roll of film hidden inside, to hold for him. The two make a date to meet at the movies later that evening. On his way to meet Gloria, Scotty is shot, when he arrives he tells Gloria that there's going to be a murder and to "beware of the dwarf", then dies. While Gloria trying to figure out what is happening, a dwarf, an albino and a man with a scar on his face, are all trying to kill her. She finally contacts the police. When SFPD Detectives Tony Carlson and 'Fergie' Ferguson arrive on the scene. Both detectives believe that she is hallucinating, Tony, attracted to her, decides to help Gloria. Will they ever find the mystery behind Scotty and his death?

By now you know I'm a huge fan of Goldie Hawn. Foul Play does a wonderful job mixing suspense with a little comedy similar to Hitchcock.. Foul Play was written in honor of director Alfred Hitchcock. Several of Hitchcocks films are referenced in the film. A innocent person becoming involved is a commonly used in many of Hitchcock films such as: The 39 Steps, Saboteur, North by Northwest and, The Man Who Knew Too Much, which gave them the idea of the opera house scene. Also, the story includes an object that is the central focus of the film and not explained until the very end. Hitchcock, used this technique in many of his films.

CACTUS FLOWER (1969) and GOLDIE HAWN FUN FACTS.

Goldie Hawn, was born November 21, 1945 in Washinton D.C. to Laura Steinhoff a jewelry shop/dance school owner and Edward Rutledge Hawn, a band musician. She has one sister, Patricia. By the age of three Goldie was taking ballet and tap dance lessons, and by the time she turned ten, she was dancing in the chorus of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo production of "The Nutcracker". At 19 she was a ballet instructor. She became a film director and producer, whose career has spanned four decades. Hawn is best known for her performances in Private Benjamin, Foul Play, Wildcats, Overboard, Bird on a Wire, Death Becomes Her, The First Wives Club, and The Banger Sisters. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1969 film Cactus Flower. She is also the mother of actors Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson. Hawn has a relationship with her long-time boyfriend, actor Kurt Russell since 1983.

Fun facts:

Her father, Edward Rutledge Hawn, is descended from Edward Rutledge, the youngest person to sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

I've always felt Goldie Hawn to be an underrated actress. A couple of my favorite Goldie films Butterflies are Free, Shampoo, Overboard, The First Wives Club. She is one of my favorite comediennes.

CACTUS FLOWER (1969). Comedy directed by Gene Saks. Cast: Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman, and Goldie Hawn. The film is based from an earlier Broadway stage play, written by Abe Burrows, which in turn was based upon the French play Fleur de cactus. The film was the seventh highest grossing film of 1970.

Middle-aged/Bachelor and dentist Julian Winston, falsely confesses to Toni a free spirited flower child, that he is married and the father of three children. Toni heartbroken, for being stood up once again.. attempts a half hearted suicide. Her bohemian neighbor smells the gas and saves her life. Upset by Toni's attempt on her life, Julian decides it's time to marry her. Julian tells Tony that he is getting a divorce from his nonexistent wife. He quickly comes up with a plan using his spinster assistant, Stephanie Dickinson, who secretly has loved him for 10 years.

Ingrid Bergman's performance is another reason why this film works. Who knew she could let loose? One of my favorite lines in the film is when Toni says to Julian (after he becomes concerned about her wearing Hot pants to work.) " not to worry..nobody around here looks. Most of our customers are classic..".

Fun Fact:

The three kids seen behind the GTO in the GM 5th Avenue showroom during Walter Matthau and Goldie Hawn's NY walkabout are David and Jenny Matthau. See if you can spot them.
